April is one of my twelve favorite months! We celebrate our diversity and at the same time relish our interconnectedness. We focus on what it means to be internationally minded and we enjoy World Cultural activities. Earth Day falls in April! And as I visit classrooms, I am absolutely thrilled by what the students are learning and how they are presenting and sharing their knowledge. Student led conferences give our students the opportunity to shine, shine, shine… and they do! Here are just some of the amazing things happening in the elementary school this month!
April 12 - Elementary Community Luncheon (no need to send lunch we will enjoy a Senegalese lunch together! Student Council is hosting a movie night for kids in grades PK3-2 from 3:30 to 5:30.
April 15 through the 19th - Baba the storyteller will visit each grade level! We also have a variety of local artists working alongside Ms. Nancy to bring Senegalese art culture into the classroom.
April 18th - Senegalese wrestlers and dancers will exhibit their skills and talents out on the field right after school.
April 18th - Parents please join us on April 18th from 7pm to 8pm as Baba the storyteller will delight you with his tales.
April 19th & April 20th - Kiriku, the musical will show in the outdoor amphitheater at 7pm.
April 22nd - no school
April 23rd - Opening Ceremony to celebrate a week of World Cultures! 8:15 in the morning.
April 24th - Please plan to join us on the field at 1:30pm for Mr. Bowler’s, 3rd grade Dance Performance followed at 2:00 pm for Ms. Shelly’s 2nd grade class Dance/Drum/Storytelling presentation!
April 25th - Learner Profile Assembly #1 at 8:30 for PK 3 - 2nd grade
April 26th - Learner Profile Assembly #2 at 8:30 for 3rd - 5th grade (this will include a dance performance by the entire 5th grade)
April 26th - Students will enjoy an early lunch so that they can visit the Country Booths from 11:45 to 2:10. Please make sure that your country is represented at this year’s country booth exhibition.
April 26th - 2:10 Closing Ceremony and Performances, Please enjoy!
April 26th - 2:45 Parade of Nations! Please join us. Plan to wear you traditional clothing. All are welcome.
As you can see, April is an important month for us at ISD! In addition to all the wonderful events going on, students will be engaged in important learning activities. Many of you will be invited to attend culminating events. You may even be asked to come and speak about your culture. Thank you in advance for your contributions.
