The Board of Trustees has voted to approve the Administration’s recommendation to maintain online classes through the end of the school year and not resume on-campus classes for the 2019-2020 school calendar. Our online learning program will run through June 10.
On March 14, I informed parents that due to the Presidential Order, on campus would be close through April 6. At the time, my optimistic thought was if the country was successful in containing the virus due to the closure of the airport and other measures, the virus could burn itself out in four to six weeks. The government could then allow schools to reopen if there were no new cases after another two-week period. This would have brought us to mid to late April. However, two weeks later, we are seeing a continual number of cases with each new outbreak pushing the end of the spread later. Given the current trajectory of cases compared with how the virus spread in other countries, it is likely Senegal will continue to see new cases for a period of time.
When it is safe to do so, we are still committed to allowing families to come to campus to use the playgrounds, courts, and fields. It may be a few weeks before we are allowed to do so, depending upon decisions the government may take.
The International School of Dakar will be open next year. No one knows what the next few months will bring, but the Board, Administration, and staff are committed to providing our students with an excellent educational experience. More information will come as it is available.
