Last Thursday, the Board of Trustees finalized the 2020-2021 school calendar adding in the parent-teacher conference days as well as the teacher professional development days. The Board typically approves the school calendar in two phases. The first phase is the start date, end date, major vacations, and government holidays. The second phase is the Parent-Teacher conference days as well as the teacher professional development days. Given the unique circumstances of this year, we wanted to get the year started before committing to these dates.
The professional development days will be on October 22, 23 and November 19, 20. On each of those days, the school will be from 8:30 to 12 noon for all grades. The students would not be on campus in the afternoon. We have scheduled them on consecutive days to balance out each cohort for the hybrid program.
Two of the four days will be devoted to diversity and inclusion training including one session on how to be an anti-racist led by Darnell Fine, a leading diversity and inclusion trainer. The other day will be led by Dr Nneka Johnson, ISD’s Director of Innovation, and a group of teacher leaders. The other two days will be devoted to professional development related to online learning and our hybrid learning program.
The fifth teacher professional development day will be on February 12th. The secondary school will use the day to prepare for our IB Middle Years Program authorization visit. The elementary school will use the day for further professional development.
Similar to previous years, there will be two sets of parent-teacher conference days. The first set will be on November 25 and November 27. On November 25, the students will attend school from 8:30 am to 12 noon and the students would not be on campus in the afternoon. There will not be school for students on November 27. The conferences will be held virtually and by appointment. Note, November 26 is a school holiday for American Thanksgiving.
The second set of conferences will be on March 11 and 12. Both days will be half days for students, 8:30 to 12 noon. We will decide if the conferences will be in person or virtual at a later date.
The parent-teacher conferences are an important part of our educational program. It is an opportunity for the parents to learn first hand how their children are doing academically and to ask the teachers questions. Students are often involved in the conferences helping to present their learning to their parents.
