It has been an intense school year and March was particularly difficult for many reasons. For now, it appears Senegal is calm and the Covid situation is improving, so I would like to take the opportunity to share some good news.
On Friday, we celebrated our 121st day with students on campus. Based on my conversations with school leaders around the world, I realize how fortunate we are to be able to reach this milestone. Many schools have not been able to move beyond hybrid, other schools have alternated between in-person learning and remote learning based on government lockdown measures, and some, particularly in the Middle East, will be in remote learning for the whole school year.
We have started planning graduation for the Class of 2021! The great news is that we will be able to host it in person and in our new theater. The Secondary School leadership will be working with Grade 12 students and parents to plan the event. ISD Health and Safety Guidelines will limit the number of people in attendance, but we will be able to celebrate our students on the stage.
We will have our first theatrical performance on the stage soon. The ISD Thespian group will put on a production they had planned to perform last year. More details soon.
ISD will offer two weeks of summer camp for elementary school students. We are excited to be able to offer more time for students on campus this year. We will share the details with parents once they are finalized. Health and safety guidelines, such as the requirement to wear a mask, will remain in place.
Elementary and middle school students had the chance to engage in some fun athletic and arts activities last week during Elementary Field Day and Middle School Fun Day. It was a great way for the student groups to bond and do some different activities. Events like these are helpful in improving student well-being. Maybe next year, we will run an adult fun day with similar events! Check out some more photos here!
We can see the end of the road for the athletic complex construction. We have three major projects left to complete. Next week, the basketball nets will be installed. The six basketball hoops will be welded to the wall and can be retracted to create more space on the court. Next, the court in the gym will be installed by an outside contractor who will come to Dakar to complete the work. Lastly, the bleacher seating will be installed. We expect to be able to have full use of the complex in August.
The pool renovation contract will be signed soon and then construction will start. The long-awaited project will widen the pool from four lanes to six lanes and add seating for spectators. The pool will be under construction through the summer with the goal of having it ready for the 2021-22 school year.
ISD staff have begun to receive Covid vaccinations at multiple sites in Dakar. With increased access to vaccines in Senegal combined with many families and staff having the opportunity to be vaccinated in their home countries during the summer, we could see a return to a more normal school environment earlier than we had thought.
Currently 7 of our 14 grades are full. Applications for next year are looking very strong again. Do make sure you complete the re-enrollment process to secure your child’s seat. Also, if you know of new families coming to Dakar with your organization or company, make sure you encourage them to begin the admissions process as soon as possible. We could see a number of grades reaching capacity by May if not sooner. Click Here for More Information on ISD Admissions
A high-quality Board of Trustees is essential to having a great school. We are looking for parents who can give 4 to 6 hours a month attending committee and Board meetings as well as sharing their perspectives and expertise. While previous Board experience is helpful, it is not required. The Board has a comprehensive orientation process and annual training. Thank you to everyone who has taken the parent survey. We have about 160 replies and would like to get close to 300. You can take the survey for each of your children as there are school-specific questions. Some parents reported being blocked from taking the survey twice from the same device. We have altered the settings to allow multiple submissions from the same device. Click Here to Take the Survey
