October 6, 2017-- October 9th was established in 1937 as Columbus Day in the United States, a national holiday in celebration of Christopher Columbus. This has caused controversy recently, since the story of Columbus' legacy often overlooks the many negative effects of colonization. Recently, the City of Los Angeles re-identified October 9th as Indigenous People Day in order to tell a fuller story of America's history. In this spirit, the library invites you to come check out our collection of works illustrating languages, arts, cultures, folklores, mythologies, and geographies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. They are fascinating reads!
A more comprehensive narrative of Columbus’ effect on the Americas can be found in chapter two of Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong by James W. Loewen. The call number for this work is: 973 LOE. If you are a fan of the television series Dexter, the second chapter from Loewen’s work will definitely read as a comparable thriller. Feel free to come check out Loewen’s work, or place his work on hold, at the ISD library, and enjoy it during next week's fall break!
Something Wicked This Way Comes...
Halloween approaches, promptly followed by The Day of the Dead. If you feel like being haunted, creeped out, horrified, chilled, cursed, stolen, or generally terrified, channel your inner vampire and devour these works.
