Greetings from the ISD Board of Trustees
We held our April Board meeting on Thursday, April 15, 2021.
The meeting began with a site visit to the Performing Arts Center and Athletic Complex where trustees were able to see the progress made so far. With the project almost at its completion, the facilities have already started being used by the school.
The Board proceeded to get a report on the Diversity and Inclusion efforts undertaken under the guidance of the Diversity and Inclusion committee and implemented by the Administration team. The work that has been done in this first year has surpassed expectations and is on track to help us build a community where every member of our community feels heard, valued, and respected. Additionally, this valuable work provides a road map not just for ISD but for other International Schools globally undertaking this pivotal work.
The Board also reviewed four policies, namely:
The Graduation Credit Requirements Policy, aimed at giving all our students with varying abilities the best chance to graduate with a recognized High School Diploma – This policy was approved.
The Teaching Credentials Policy, a review of which is part of the Diversity and Inclusion process ensuring the reflection of the Diverse community at ISD – This policy was approved.
The Student Discipline policy arose from the ‘No More Silence’ movement that started over the summer. This review would give jurisdiction to the school in cases where events that have happened have an effect on the learning environment of the school – This policy was approved.
The Change of School Hours policy, geared toward ensuring that COVID protocols continue to be adhered to in the next school year with no loss to instructional time – This policy was reviewed and feedback provided to the policy committee for further review.
The Board also discussed, as a first reading, the draft calendar for the 2021 – 2022 school year. While the Board had already approved start, end, and major holiday dates, this calendar now includes Professional Development days and Parent Conference days. The final approval of the calendar will be done at the May Board meeting.
And finally, the Board discussed:
The upcoming trustee elections – with 6 vacancies available and 8 candidates have applied, the elections will run electronically from May 3rd to May 18th with the results being shared at the AGM.
The change to the By-Law proposal – Also to be included as part of the vote, some educational clips will be shared with the community to provide information and clarification on its rationale.
The AGM – To be held on May 18th, with the possibility of it being held in person. Communication will be sent out to the community ahead of time on the logistics.
The next Board meeting will be held in person, at ISD, on Thursday, May 20th at 6:00 pm with refreshments served from 5:30 pm.
