Board News: Annual Board Retreat

Greetings from the ISD Board of Trustees, which held its Annual Retreat last weekend. The retreat is usually the first time in the school year that all of the new and returning Trustees get to meet and know each other.

While it is a great team building exercise, it is an important step for the Board as a way to kick off the new school year as time is spent on reviewing the vision, organizing ourselves as a Board, setting goals for the Board and the Director as well as putting the right structure in place to achieve such goals.

Teresa Arpin joined us this year to facilitate our three-day program. Teresa is an experienced school board strategic planner and facilitator.

During the course of the retreat, she led us through governance best practices, case studies, and group conversations allowing us to understand our responsibilities as Trustees and identify key priorities for the year.

Teresa took us through a generative discussion relating to the growth of ISD in a time of increasing enrollment and Trustees went through a brief training on the reading of financial reports.

Finally, following a number of discussions and exercises, Board and Director goals for 2021 – 2022 were set and six committees who will help achieve the goals were formed:

Finance: Molly Glenn, Treasurer

Buildings & Grounds: Aylin Karahan, Vice-Chair

Policy: Carlo Cassina, Trustee

Governance and Development: Sadia Asim, Secretary

Diversity & Inclusion: S. Afua Manyo-Plange, Trustee

Growth: Birame Sock, Chair

If you are interested in learning more about the committees and their work or have any questions and comments please contact the Board via our email address:

Our next Board meeting will be held in person at ISD on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 at 6:00 pm. As always, parents and guardians of current ISD students as well as faculty members are welcome to attend as observers. Should you be interested in attending, please email Wendy Kinyeki, the Assistant to the Board at for the meeting details.

We hope that you have had a great start to the school year and we look forward to serving you in the months ahead.

Kind regards,

Birame SOCK

Chair, ISD Board of Trustees
